People familiar with Hong Kong know how precious a few extra square feet are in a city plagued with bloated and congestion high-rise buildings. Which is why this home in Yuen Long is indeed unique: its own interiors boast bright open spaces, and the home has a backyard area that’s surrounded by lush foliage — a charm in Hong Kong.

“The Vineyard is way away from Hong Kong’s business district,” says interior designer Peter Ho. “Nowadays, when people with means crave more space, if they don’t head to The Peak they go to the New Territories,” says Ho.

Ho’s clients minimize the branch of inside and outside by maintaining the balcony doors open as frequently as the weather allows. Floor-to-ceiling curtains, a textured rug and vibrant blue throw pillows warm up the area.

The design group customized a raised platform at the outdoor area, creating a resort feel and enabling the homeowners to enjoy a bit of sunshine.

A bird’s eye view of the outdoor area shows the angular shapes formed by the balcony edges, platform base and outdoor wicker couch. All the decoration is watertight, a necessity in humid and typhoon-prone Hong Kong.

The customized wall-to-wall shelving system is the pièce de résistance of this living room; the diverse orientations of the cubbies possess a puzzle-like impact and supply visual appeal to the room. The stairs optimize the clients’ living and common places — a priority at space-hungry Hong Kong, even in Yuen Long.

“We designed the interesting unit using a purpose: ” We needed a characteristic wall to link the living area, dining area and open kitchen. It is interesting to see the way the colour and choice of what’s displayed really enriches the white-tinted wood characteristic walls,” says Ho.

Like an elaborate set of dangling earrings, the bedside lanterns from the master bedroom include a touch of chinoiserie and reflect the Far Eastern context of the largely contemporary home. The buttery yellow tassels set well with the warm wood tones of the total decor. The light cast by the lanterns highlights the textural appeal of this grass fabric panel behind the bed.

A floating vanity coupled with perpendicular cubbies offers ample storage room in the master bathroom. LED lights provide both disposition and practical lighting that’s ideal for toilet breaks during the night and in the morning, when harsh lighting overhead could be disruptive.
